Spring yachting in Croatia: Why set sail before everyone else?

Spring yachting in Croatia: Why set sail before everyone else?

The main advantages of spring yachting in Croatia

Forget the summer battle for the last available buoy, where you sometimes feel like a gladiator in the Roman Colosseum. Spring on the Adriatic is a completely different league. The only things missing are bananas, the sea, and happy hour in Karlovac... wait, there is sea there!

Pleasant temperatures and yachting in Croatia in April

The air temperature in spring is around 15 to 20 °C. Ideal. No sweaty T-shirt after five minutes of pulling ropes on deck. Yachting in Croatia in April means you won't get burnt to a crisp on the first day and spend the rest of the week sleeping standing up. The sea isn't quite warm enough for an hour-long swim (it's around 15 °C), but let's be honest – we're here to sail, not to swim on an inflatable flamingo.

Divine tranquility in the marinas and nature in bloom

Do you know how rosemary and pine trees smell when they haven't been scorched by the August sun? Like the most expensive perfume, only free. Nature is awakening, the islands are green, and the marinas are empty. "Finally, I can hear the waves splashing and not the thumping music from the party boat next door," my friend Pavel told me last year as we sat in the cockpit in the evening. And he was absolutely right.

Biograd na Moru as the ideal starting point for your cruise

Where to set sail? Biograd na Moru is a safe bet. It is the yachting center of the world. Beginners will find gentle winds, easy navigation, and plenty of safe anchorages with mooring buoys. Experienced sea dogs can set off on longer trips from here and enjoy the divine tranquility of more distant islands. I prefer to set sail from here. It's like putting on a pair of good old sneakers—you just know they won't let you down.

Southern route: From Šibenik to the Kornat labyrinth

So where shall we go? How about south? From Biograd via Pašman and Murter to historical gems.

Historic Šibenik and the waterfalls on the Krka River

Šibenik is absolutely amazing. An ancient city in a bay dominated by the sea fortress of St. Nicholas. Incidentally, it is shaped like a keyhole and is full of secret passages. However, the most significant monument is the all-stone Cathedral of St. James. It is decorated with 72 life-size portrait busts that stare at you from the walls as if you owed them money.

From Šibenik, head upstream along the Krka River to the port of Skradin. The spring waterfalls on the Krka roar with water from the melting snow in the mountains. It is a roar that you simply cannot experience in summer.

Zlarin Island: An oasis of peace and coral reefs

Golden island. Green island. Coral island. Zlarin has more nicknames than the average mobster. In the past, it was famous for harvesting red coral. There are no cars here. Can you believe it? No honking, no exhaust fumes. Just you, the scent of rosemary, and crystal-clear sea.

Northern route: Wild nature and forgotten islands

If the south doesn't appeal to you, turn the helm northwest. There you will find wilderness and islands that many sailors tend to forget about.

Premuda and Susak: Underwater caves and sandy beaches

Premuda will captivate you. The sea rock Cathedral, with its system of interconnected caves, is completely unique underwater. And Susak? It owes its name to the fragrant oregano that grows there. Sandy beaches and limestone mountains invite exploration. "Since we're here, it would be a sin not to taste the local wine from those beautiful vineyards," I always tell the crew. And you can't sin on a boat, can you?

Dugi Otok: Contrasts of nature and the salt lake Mir

Dugi Otok is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you're going to get. In the north, don't miss the picturesque port of Božava, surrounded by pine groves, and the old ship bunker, where you can moor alongside. In the south lies the Telašćica Nature Park with its endemic wildlife.
And the salty, drainless Lake Mir? That's a chapter unto itself. Thanks to evaporation, it has a high salt concentration and is usually warmer than the sea in spring. Ideal for those of us who only get into cold water under threat of physical violence.

Kornati National Park without crowds of tourists

147 islands, islets, and reefs scattered across the azure sea. A labyrinth where pirates and partisans once hid thanks to the excellent conditions. Today, thousands of yachtsmen hide here in the summer. But in the spring? You have it almost to yourself.
Ancient lighthouses will guide you, the most beautiful of which is Sestrica. I stand crouched behind the helm and enjoy the view. Just watch out for unmarked reefs just below the surface. Hitting a rock on the first day of sailing is an experience you don't want to write in your logbook. Oh, and buy your park tickets online in advance on the national parks website. You'll save a lot (maybe for an evening beer).

What not to underestimate when planning a trip

Spring is great, but the sea can be rough. What did I learn? That underestimating preparation doesn't pay off.

Yachting in May in Croatia: What weather to expect?

In May, average air temperatures climb to 18–25 °C and the sea is a tolerable 18 °C. Yachting in Croatia in May is actually like an early summer. But beware, the weather can be changeable. The sun may be warm, but as soon as the wind picks up and humidity increases, the perceived temperature drops faster than my diet resolutions.

Packing list: What to pack for a spring boat trip

Winter on a boat is like someone hitting you over the head with a club every minute – annoying and it ruins the whole trip. But when you're dry and warm, you can enjoy yachting to the fullest. So what should you pack?

  • A functional, breathable base layer (no, a stretched-out cotton T-shirt doesn't count).
  • A warmer sweater, winter jacket, or light down jacket.
  • A waterproof windbreaker with a hood and waterproof pants.
  • Warm socks.
  • Neoprene shoes or sailing boots (plus shoes for shore).
  • A hat and scarf around your neck (you really don't want the wind in your ears).
  • Gloves.
  • Clear glasses and sunglasses (the sun burns even through clouds).
  • Sunscreen and cream for wind-exposed hands/face.
  • Headlamp.
  • Thermos (for hot tea or grog, let's be honest).

Set sail for a spring adventure

Does this mean that we can have the beautiful bays we admire in catalog photos all to ourselves in the spring? Exactly. Spring sailing is simply a labor of love.
So, are you packing your boat yet? Choose a boat at a great off-season price, get a group of friends together, and set sail before everyone else. Or do what I do – set sail twice. In the spring with friends for some serious yachting and in the summer with the family for a swim. Whether you choose the northern wilderness or the southern classic, remember one thing: it's always better at sea than in the office. So fair winds and following seas!

Where are the best places to swim on the Adriatic? A Guide for Sailors

Croatia is close by, with crystal-clear waters, a rugged coastline, and thousands of islands glistening on the horizon. And when you add to that the privacy of your own sailboat, which will take you exactly where you point on the map… well, tell me, can you resist? Let’s take a look together at the best places to swim in the Adriatic—and, most importantly, why yachting in Croatia is the smartest way to discover this country.

Yachting in Turkey: Discover the most beautiful spots along the Turquoise Coast

Are you tired of perpetually crowded Croatian marinas and overpriced Italian ports? I certainly am. So I started looking further east—and discovered a destination that took my breath away. Yachting in Turkey is no compromise, but a full-fledged experience that in many ways puts the classic Mediterranean to shame. A turquoise coastline, ancient ruins peeking out from the cliffs, bays straight out of a paradise vacation ad, and prices that won’t break the bank. Let’s see why you should pack your swimsuit and head right here.

Skradin Itinerary: The Best of the Town and the National Park

When my boss sent me an email with the subject line “ASAP” for the sixth time that day, I knew it was time to get out of there. Anywhere with no cell service, where the only deadline is sunset. I chose Croatia. But not the typical kind, where you fight for a spot to lay your towel at the campsite. I wanted something more. And so my personal Skradin itinerary was born—a plan for a week-long escape from reality, where the wind in my hair and the salt water on my skin take center stage.
