Discover the beauty of Greece on a yacht: History and sea in harmony

Why choose Greece for your sailing holiday - exceptional combination of history and nature

Greece is like a living open-air museum. Imagine it - one day you're moored at the beach, with only the azure sea surrounding you and the scent of pine forests in the background. And the next day you wake up to views of ancient temples or Venetian fortresses that tell the stories of thousands of years. From the deck of a ship, Greek monuments offer a perspective no guidebook can describe.

Whether you're a fan of antiquity, a lover of Byzantium or fascinated by medieval fortresses, every corner of Greece has something to offer. You'll reach places most tourists don't get to. As a bonus, you'll have incredible peace and quiet - no crowds of selfie enthusiasts. This is where you really relax.

Specifics of sailing in Greek waters

But watch out! Yachting in Greece has its own specifics. If you are used to Croatian buoys and moorings, here you will find an anchor - shore. Yes, it's a bit of acrobatics, but nothing that can't be mastered (and besides - who doesn't love a new challenge?).

Most of the anchorages are "wild", which has one huge advantage: A night's stay won't cost you a euro. And while in the Mediterranean you search for a beach like a treasure map of pirates, here you'll find them on every corner. Pebbles or sand? It's up to you.

For history lovers: from ancient monuments to Venetian fortresses

If you're the type of person who melts with happiness at the sight of temple ruins, you've won. For example, the island of Delos - according to legend, the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis - is literally littered with archaeological treasures. Sail in early in the morning and you'll have the whole place almost to yourself.

Rhodes, with its medieval walls and Mandraki harbour, could be your next stop. The Rhodes Colossus may no longer stand here (and between you and me - if it did, we probably wouldn't even be able to dock here), but the atmosphere of the place richly compensates.

What about Nafplio in the Peloponnese? While you're having an ouzo under the stars in the evening, by day you can admire the Venetian fortress of Palamidi or tread in the footsteps of ancient heroes in nearby Mycenae.

Relaxation on beaches and in secluded coves

The sea here is as clear as your conscience after the first day of your holiday. An ideal destination is the island of Milos, home to the famous statue of Venus de Melo (although it now graces the Louvre). Milos offers beautiful beaches like Sarakiniko with bizarre white rock formations resembling a moonscape.

Then there's Navagio Bay on Zakynthos, where you anchor next to the wreck of a smuggler's ship. Not bad for a breakfast overlooking iconic postcard scenery, right?

And if you're looking for something less famous? Corfu's Petriti Bay is the ultimate haven of peace and tranquillity with a Caribbean flavour.

How to handle anchoring and mooring at the shore

Let's face it - if you're not friends with the anchor, Greece will force you to brush up on (or finally master) this skill. The key to success is having the right equipment: long ropes are a must-have! Tie the stern to trees or rocks and your boat will stand stronger than the Parthenon on the Acropolis.

Tip for newbies: don't be afraid to ask local fishermen for advice on the best place to anchor. They'll usually be happy to help (and might even recommend the best taverna in the village).

And don't forget: If you're not sure of the depth or anchor hold, do a test manoeuvre rather than having a nighttime adventure drifting the boat. Leave the drama to Greek tragedies!

Recommendations for tasting the local cuisine

It wouldn't be the same without good food! The Greeks know how to please your palate and your stomach after a day of sailing. Start with the classics: souvlaki with fresh pita or moussaka with fragrant béchamel on top are a must.

How about trying something a little more special? For example, seafood grilled right in front of you - like octopus marinated in vinegar or fresh calamari. Wash it all down with retsina or ouzo and suddenly you'll find that time has ceased to exist.

Then you'll find something unique on every island - the cheeses of Naxos, the honey of Crete or the famous olives of Kalamata won't leave you cold even in 35°C shade... But more on that next time!

Whether you're a seasoned sailor or just dreaming of a cruise, Greece has it all: azure seas, breathtaking sights and tranquil coves. Hop aboard a catamaran or other boat and experience the beauty of sailing in Greece, where mysterious history combines with the beauty of sailing and Greek nature. So, ready to rejuvenate your soul with the harmony of the sea and antiquity?
