Dream cruise: why is Thailand an ideal yachting destination?

Year-round sailing and a stable climate

One of the biggest attractions is the fact that you can go sailing in Thailand at almost any time. Thanks to its location close to the equator, the climate is tropical, with average temperatures between 27 and 29°C all year round. Sure, there are monsoons, we'll talk about those in a moment, but even so, Thailand is a destination where the season never ends. Forget the winter jackets, swimwear and sunglasses will do!

A wealth of islands and coastlines

Thailand boasts more than 1,400 islands and islets scattered along a coastline of over 3,200 km. That's a heck of a lot of places to explore! Each island is different - from bustling tourist hubs to deserted coves where you'll feel like you've discovered the last paradise on earth. Limestone cliffs jutting dramatically out of the sea, white sandy beaches lined with palm trees, hidden lagoons... just a feast for the eyes.

The main yachting areas of Thailand

Thailand offers two main areas that differ in atmosphere and conditions.

Andaman Sea: Sailing Centre

It's alive here! The Andaman Sea on the west coast is the main centre of yachting in Thailand. Most charter companies and marinas are centred around the island of Phuket, which is a great starting point. From here you can set off to explore:

  • Phang Nga Bay: famous for its limestone formations and James Bond Island.
  • Krabi Province: With beautiful beaches like Railay and breathtaking scenery.
  • Phi Phi Islands: The iconic place you know from the movie The Beach.
  • Similan and Surin Islands: A diver's paradise (be warned, they are seasonally closed).
  • Koh Lanta: A quieter island with long beaches and great snorkeling.

Gulf of Thailand:

For a more private cruiseIf you're looking for calmer waters and fewer crowds, the Gulf of Thailand east of the Malay Peninsula is the way to go. Here, too, you'll find beautiful islands such as Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan (famous for the Full Moon Party, but it also has quiet corners) and Koh Tao (another diving mecca). Other interesting spots are Ko Chang or Ko Samet. This area is ideal for cruising, especially from April to October when the Andaman Sea is rainy.

What not to miss when cruising in Thailand

Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island

This is just a classic. The majestic limestone cliffs rising out of the turquoise water will take your breath away. Ko Tapu Island, known as James Bond Island (The Man with the Golden Gun was filmed here), may be a tourist magnet, but seeing it for yourself is well worth it. I recommend exploring the bay by kayak to get to the hidden caves and lagoons. And don't forget the floating village of Koh Panyee!

Crabs and the charm of Railay Beach

Railay Beach is only accessible by boat, which gives it a touch of exclusivity. It is surrounded by high limestone cliffs that attract climbers from all over the world. In addition to swimming and sunbathing, you can enjoy a Thai massage right on the beach or rent a kayak and explore the surrounding coastline. The sunset here is absolutely magical.

Underwater World: Similan and Surin Islands

If you're a fan of diving or snorkelling, this is your dream. The Similan and Surin Islands (national parks, open from about mid-October to mid-May) are among the best dive sites in the world. Visibility is often incredible (up to 30-40 metres!) and under the surface you'll find a colourful world of coral, schools of fish, turtles, manta rays and, with a bit of luck, whale sharks. Don't forget your camera!

Koh Lanta: a snorkelling paradise

Koh Lanta is such a relaxed island, perfect for families or those looking for a more peaceful atmosphere. The long sandy beaches on the west coast with a gentle entry into the sea are perfect for relaxing and snorkelling. Rent a scooter and explore the island, visit the national park in the south with its lighthouse. South of Koh Lanta are smaller islands such as Koh Ngai, Koh Kradan and Koh Muk with the amazing Emerald Cave - what a treat!

Tips for an unforgettable yachting holiday

To make your cruise truly perfect, I have a few more tips for you.

Choosing a vessel: Why consider a catamaran in Thailand

Thai waters are perfect for catamaran cruising. Why? A catamaran in Thailand offers several advantages.

  • Stability: Two hulls mean less heeling and more comfortable sailing, which is especially appreciated by those who suffer from seasickness or families with children
  • Space: More space for sunbathing, dining and sleeping.
  • Smaller draft: This is invaluable for discovering Thailand's hidden gems
  • The view: the elevated saloon often offers panoramic views.

Of course, the choice is yours, but a catamaran in Thailand is a safe bet for maximum comfort and experience in my opinion.

Sample Itinerary: A Weekly Adventure from Phuket

For inspiration, I've attached one of the possible weekly itineraries to show you the best of the Andaman Sea:

Day 1: Phuket - embarkation, prepare supplies, sail to a nearby bay for the first night.

Day 2: Cruise to Sirinat National Park (north of Phuket) or directly to Phang Nga Bay (about 20-25 nm). Anchoring among limestone giants.

Day 3: Exploration of Phang Nga Bay - James Bond Island, Koh Panyee, kayak caves (approx. 15-20 nm)

Day 4: Cruise to Krabi area - Railay Beach, Ao Nang (approx. 30 nm). Possibility of a trip to the mainland.

Day 5: Phi Phi Islands (approx. 17 nm). Maya Bay (if open), snorkeling, evening life on Phi Phi Don.

Day 6: Cruise to Koh Racha Yai (approx. 30 nm) - beautiful beaches, great snorkeling, quieter atmosphere.

Day 7: Return to Phuket (approx. 18 nm), handover of the boat.

This is just an outline of course, you can adjust the itinerary to your liking and time.

Conclusion: your dream cruise in Thailand awaits

So, are you looking forward to it? Yachting Thailand is an experience to remember. The combination of stunning scenery, friendly people, delicious cuisine and great sailing conditions makes Thailand one of the best sailing destinations in the world. Whether you're a seasoned sea wolf or just starting out in sailing, you'll find a great place here. Pack your swimsuit, a good mood and head out for adventure. Your dream Thai cruise is waiting for you!

Sailing through time: sailing in the footsteps of ancient Greece

Sailing through time: sailing in the footsteps of ancient Greece

Let's face it. When you say sailing, most of us think of Croatia. It's like our second living room by the sea, we know every rock and every konoba there. But what if I told you that just a little further south lies a world where sails are stretched by the wind of the gods, where every bay tells a thousand-year-old story, and where the word "marina" often means just a piece of rock and your own anchor?

Welcome to Greece. The land where democracy, philosophy and, dare I say it, the best gyros in the world were born. Sailing in Greece is not just about sailing from A to B. It's a journey through time, an adventure and a lesson in humility all rolled into one. So we're leaving the Adriatic and heading to the cradle of civilization!

One way cruise through the historical treasures of the Adriatic

One way cruise through the historical treasures of the Adriatic

Yeah, Croatia. The destination where you meet your neighbour from the apartment block on the beach and where the steak in foil has become a national treasure. But what if I told you there was another way? That you can forget about the clogged motorway and the fight for the last available space on the blanket?
Picture this: sunshine, wind in your hair (or what's left of it), and waking up in a different port every day. No crowds, no stress. Just you, your crew and the endless sea. That's what sailing on a yacht is like. And this itinerary? This one's for connoisseurs. For those who want more than just lying by the water. It's a journey in the footsteps of history, full of UNESCO sites, ancient ruins and pirate stories.

Sailing Croatia versus Greece: where to anchor next?

Okay, come on, admit it. Which of you are already thinking about where to go with your boat next season? Classic, right? And the eternal question that divides the sailing community more than the debate about whether a gena or a killer whale is better: sailing Greece or Croatia? Croatia may be a bit of our yachting living room wall, a certainty we're familiar with, but Greece... it beckons more and more. Let's take a closer look at these two destinations.
