Sailing and running: why these sports complement each other perfectly

Running as an ideal complement to sailing
Tough life as a sailor, what can we say? Pulling ropes, twisting the rudder and looking at the horizon all day long. It makes you stiff. And that's where running comes in as your best friend.

Physical fitness and endurance for sailors
After a few days on a boat, where your movement is limited to going from the cockpit to the fridge, your body starts to reverberate. Muscles as stiff as an old ship's rope and fitness at a standstill. A regular run ashore is like living water.
- Muscle and cardio strengthening: running is great for stretching and strengthening legs that don't get much work on a boat. It will also keep your cardiovascular system working, so you won't get upset by the more strenuous manoeuvres in port.
- Improving balance and coordination: moving around on a boat requires constant balancing. Running, especially in rough terrain, is a great training for proprioception - the perception of your own body position. You'll be more confident and agile on board.
Even on the most beautiful ship with the best crew, submarine sickness can sometimes strike. Being in a confined space for days on end is just tough.
- Escape from the deck to land: Putting on your sneakers and running ashore for a few dozen minutes is the perfect mental reset. You're suddenly alone, just you, your breath, and the road ahead.
- Discovering new places. You'll discover hidden beaches, remote villages and viewpoints you wouldn't have been able to reach by car or on foot.

Sailing as a reward and regeneration for runners
Now let's turn this around. What does sailing bring to a runner? Everything he misses after a hard workout. It's the best reward and form of active recovery you can imagine.
Active relaxation at sea
Forget about lying passively on the couch. The sea offers a much better way to let your body rest.
- Calm and fresh air: what could be better for tired muscles and minds than a quiet bob on the waves and the salty air? This is a balm that no wellness centre can offer.
- Swimming and snorkelling: A jump into the clear water after a morning outing is priceless. Swimming is also a great restorative activity that will relax your muscles and not strain your joints.
Discovering hidden running routes
This is the trump card. A yacht will take you to places that ordinary land runners wouldn't dream of.
- Access to remote islands: Anchor in a deserted cove, hop in a boat, drive ashore and have the whole island to yourself. No tourists, no cars, just you and nature.
- Unique views: Imagine you're running along the crest of a small island, with the sea glittering below you and other islands looming on the horizon. These are panoramas that will take your breath away (if the hill hasn't already).
Croatia: a paradise for sailing and running
And where to try this perfect combination? Well, in Croatia! It is a mecca for yachtsmen and at the same time offers endless possibilities for runners.

Trogir as an ideal starting point
Our starting block? Trogir. A city so beautiful that UNESCO has locked it away as a World Heritage Site. Its historic centre, squeezed onto a small island, is a labyrinth of narrow stone streets that will make you feel like you're in another century. Running around the Kamerlengo Fortress and St. Lawrence Cathedral early in the morning, before the crowds of tourists wake up, is an experience in itself.
From Trogir, you can run along the coast towards the Rožac campsite or take longer routes to the adjacent island of Čiovo, where you'll also find off-road trails.

Islands where the sea and running come together
And now the best part. We're weighing anchor and setting sail for a week of running adventures.
- Vis and Bisevo: Peace and History
First stop: Vis. An island that's been a military base for so long it's kind of forgotten how to be a tourist destination. And that's a good thing! It's rugged, authentic and offers quiet routes with minimal people. After your run, you can reward yourself with a trip to the neighbouring islet of Bisevo and its magical Blue Cave. - Hvar and Stari Grad: From party to history The town of Hvar is like that friend who always persuades you to have one more drink. But we're heading to the other side of the island, to Stari Grad. Here, we run around the Starigrad Plain, a UNESCO-listed landscape that was cultivated by the ancient Greeks. You run through olive groves and stone walls, and 2,400 years of history rustles beneath your feet.
- Brac and Bol: Running the Golden Horn
What would a cruise be without a visit to Brac? We anchor in Bol, home to the iconic Zlatni Rat beach. A morning run along this ever-changing tip of land, with turquoise seas on either side, is an experience you won't forget.
Practical tips for combining sports
Sounds great, doesn't it? But before you go, a few tips for the trip:
- Planning: tailor your cruise plan to the weather. Have both "run" and "non-run" route options ready.
- Equipment: Don't forget to pack lightweight running shoes, functional clothing and a headlamp for morning or evening runs. And, of course, swimwear!
- Safety: At sea, listen to the captain, on land, listen to your instincts. Always let someone know where you're going and when you plan to return. And above all, drink plenty of water!
Connect your passions
The combination of sailing and running is not just about sport. It's about discovery, about freedom, about experiences you can't buy. It's about actively enjoying every moment of your holiday.
So next time you're planning a cruise, pack a pair of sneakers in your boat bag. You might just find that you've discovered the best way to combine your passion for the sea with the joy of exercise. And that, my friends, is a recipe for a perfect vacation and a healthy lifestyle. Happy sailing and easy step.
